چکیده

Abstract. Precipitation over the mid-latitudes originates mostly from ice phase within mixed-phase clouds, signifying importance of initial crystal formation. Primary crystals are formed on ice-nucleating particles (INPs), which measurements suggest sparsely populated in troposphere. INPs emitted by a large number ground-based sources into atmosphere, where they can be lifted up to cloud heights. Therefore, it is vital understand vertical INP transport mechanisms, particularly complex orographic terrain. We investigate and mixing mechanisms terrain during cloudy conditions simultaneous situ concentration at high valley mountaintop site Swiss Alps late winter 2019. On mountaintop, concentrations were, average, lower than valley. However, diurnal cycle was observed absent The median equilibrated found towards night. that, nearly 70 % cases, INP-rich air masses were orographically low elevation upstream measurement site. In addition, we present evidence course day, containing advected plateau sites, contributing INPs. Our results local enhancement events.

Atmospheric Ice-Nucleating Particles in the Dusty Tropical Atlantic

Desert dust is one of the most important atmospheric ice-nucleating aerosol species around the globe. However, there have been very few measurements of ice-nucleating particle (INP) concentrations in dusty air close to desert sources. In this study we report the concentration of INPs in dust laden air over the tropical Atlantic within a few days’ transport of one of the world’s most important a...

Rainfall drives atmospheric ice-nucleating particles in the coastal climate of southern Norway

Ice-nucleating particles (INPs) active at modest supercooling (e.g. −8 C; INP−8) can transform clouds from liquid to mixed phase, even at very small number concentrations (< 10 m−3). Over the course of 15 months, we found very similar patterns in weekly concentrations of INP−8 in PM10 (median= 1.7 m−3, maximum= 10.1 m−3) and weekly amounts of rainfall (median= 28 mm, maximum= 153 mm) at Birkene...

Rainfall drives atmospheric ice nucleating particles in the maritime climate of Southern Norway

Ice nucleating particles active at warm temperatures (e.g. -8 °C; INP-8) can transform clouds from liquid to mixedphase, even at very small number concentrations (<10 m). Over the course of 15 months, we found very similar patterns in weekly concentrations of INP-8 in PM10 (median = 1.7 m, maximum = 10.1 m) and weekly amounts of rainfall (median = 28 mm, maximum = 153 mm) at Birkenes, southern ...

Export of ice nucleating particles from a watershed

Ice nucleating particles (INP) active at a few degrees below 0°C are produced by a range of organisms and released into the environment. They may affect cloud properties and precipitation when becoming airborne. So far, our knowledge about sources of biological INP is based on grab samples of vegetation, soil or water studied in the laboratory. By combining measurements of INP concentrations in...

Interactive comment on “Rainfall drives atmospheric ice nucleating particles in the maritime climate of Southern Norway” by

The authors show the results of monitoring of ice nucleating particles (INPs) active at a relatively warm temperature (-8◦C) in PM10 and PM2.5 at a coastal site in southern Norway. They also discuss possible linkages of INPs and local meteorological events. Despite low time resolution and limitation of available temperature (weekly INP data at -8◦C), this work provides rare and very valuable da...
